In 1914 Hermann Junker excavated some of the smaller structures and shafts immediately to the west of Cheop's Pyamid.In the excavation diary for 3rd March 1914 he notes
False door and jambs of Nesw-Ptah. Serdäb of the shaft 684 with wooden figures. Start of work at Itj. ( Junker, 1914).Of the excavation in general, he says:
Our finds this year are almost exclusively and a very specific group that belongs together in terms of time, as can be deduced from the graves themselves. For example the tombs of Idew II, Merj-ib, shaft 707 and shaft 684.
