Kahun

Kahun is the name given by Flinders Petrie to the town of workers for the pyramid of Senwosret II that he excavated in 1888-90 and 1914. It is near the modern village of el-Lahun in the Faiyum, and is often referred to by that name.

Petrie's excavations found many household objects and tools, and these are thought to be a good indication of daily life in the Twelfth dynasty. The Kahun papyri were also found at the site. These are about 1000 papyri fragments containing accounts, and legal and medical matters.

The site was occupied into the late Thirteenth dynasty, then again in the New Kingdom, when there were large land reclamation schemes in the area.
